1. 1

A spinney is a small patch of trees and bushes — smaller than a wood, much smaller than a forest. Think of a clump of trees standing at the edge of a field, or in the corner of , big enough to walk into and be out of sight, but you could walk through it in a minute or two. The word is strongly British, and rather rural and old-fashioned: you meet it in country writing, on maps and in place names, and in the speech of people who live in the English countryside, more often than in city speech. Americans would say a stand of trees, a copse, or just some trees. The original sense is a thorny thicket, which is why a spinney is often thought of as tangled and full of undergrowth rather than a tidy row of trees.
