A spell-check is the tool inside a computer program — Word, Google Docs, your phone's keyboard, a browser — that looks at what you have typed and marks the words it does not recognise, usually with a red wavy . You can then right-click and pick the spelling it suggests.

A spell-check is spell-check 是 inside a computer program電腦程式裡 the tool的那個工具 — Word Word、 Google Docs Google 文件、 your phone's keyboard你手機的鍵盤、 a browser瀏覽器 — that looks at它會看 what you have typed你打了什麼, and marks然後標出 the words it does not recognise它不認得的字, usually通常 with a red wavy underline是用一條紅色的波浪底線。 You can then你接著可以 right-click按右鍵, and pick挑選 the spelling it suggests它建議的拼法。

The word is used two ways. As a noun it can mean the tool itself ("the spell-check didn't catch that") or the act of checking ("give it a spell-check before you send it" — meaning run the check over the whole document once). As a verb it means to run that check: "I spell-checked the report", "have you spell-checked it?" Written forms wander: spell-check, spellcheck, spell check all appear, and no one will mark you wrong for any of them.

The word這個字 is used two ways有兩種用法。 As a noun當名詞時 it can mean它可以指 the tool itself工具本身 — "the spell-check didn't catch that"「拼字檢查沒抓到那個」 — or the act of checking或指檢查這個動作 — "give it a spell-check before you send it"「寄出之前給它跑一次拼字檢查」 — meaning意思是 run the check把檢查 over the whole document在整份文件上 once跑一遍。 As a verb當動詞時 it means它指 to run that check去跑那個檢查: "I spell-checked the report"「我把報告跑過拼字檢查了」、 "have you spell-checked it?"「你跑過拼字檢查了嗎?」 Written forms wander書寫的形式很不固定: spell-check, spellcheck, spell check spell-check、spellcheck、spell check all appear都出現過, for any of them用哪一種 no one will mark you wrong都不會有人判你錯。

Here is the honest part your teacher should tell you. A spell-check only knows whether a string of letters is a real English word — it does not know whether it is the word you meant. Type "their" when you meant "there", or "form" when you meant "from", and the tool stays silent, because both are perfectly good words. So a clean spell-check does not mean a clean piece of writing, and students who trust it completely hand in essays full of real words in wrong places.

Here is這裡是 your teacher should tell you你的老師應該告訴你 the honest part的老實話。 A spell-check拼字檢查 only knows只知道 a string of letters一串字母 is a real English word是不是一個真的英文字 — it does not know它不知道 whether it is它是不是 the word you meant你想說的那個字。 when you meant "there"你想說的是 there、 Type "their"卻打了 their, or when you meant "from"或想說 from、 "form"打了 form, and the tool這工具 stays silent保持沉默, because因為 both兩個 are perfectly good words都是完全合格的英文字。 So所以 a clean spell-check一次乾乾淨淨的拼字檢查 does not mean不代表 a clean piece of writing一篇乾乾淨淨的文章, and而 who trust it completely完全信任它的 students學生, hand in交出來的 essays作文 full of裡滿是 real words真實存在 in wrong places卻放錯位置的字。

Newer tools that check grammar and meaning are better at this, but the plain spell-check still cannot read your mind. It also flags names, place names and technical terms it has never met, which is normal and not an error on your part.

that check grammar and meaning會檢查文法和語意的 Newer tools比較新的工具 are better at this在這件事上比較行, but the plain spell-check但陽春的拼字檢查 still仍然 cannot read your mind讀不了你的心。 It also flags它也會標出 it has never met它沒見過的 names人名、 place names地名 and technical terms和專門術語, which is normal這很正常, and not an error on your part不是你的錯。
