A speakerphone is a phone you can talk on without holding it to your ear. It has a loudspeaker so everyone in the room hears the other person, and a microphone good enough to pick up voices from across the room. The classic picture is the star-shaped or round unit sitting in the middle of a meeting table.
In real life, though, the far use is about your own mobile. Every mobile phone has this function built in, and what people actually say is 'on speakerphone' or, even more often, just 'on speaker': 'Put her on speakerphone.' 'You're on speaker — my wife can hear you too.' 'Sorry, I'm driving, you're on speakerphone.' So treat 'on speakerphone' as the phrase to learn, not the bare noun.
That last example shows why the word matters socially. Telling someone they are on speakerphone is a small piece of — it warns them that other people can hear, so they do not say something private by accident. English speakers do this quite carefully, and a who never says it can cause an awkward moment.
As a noun on its own, speakerphone is most natural for the dedicated conference-room device.
