Wanted by many people and hard to get. It is a compliment, and it always carries the idea of : a sought-after job, a sought-after speaker, a sought-after address in the city, a sought-after old guitar. If everyone can have it, it is popular but not sought-after. Two habits are worth copying. First, it loves an in front — 'highly sought-after' is by far the commonest form, with 'much sought-after' close behind; 'very sought-after' sounds slightly off to many ears. Second, it usually sits in front of a noun ('a highly sought-after designer') or after 'be' ('her work is much sought-after'), and it belongs to the language of job ads, property listings, auction catalogues and news writing rather than casual chat. Between friends you would say 'everyone wants one'. The word inside is the past participle of 'seek'. English keeps the strange old form seek → sought → sought here, which is why the spelling looks nothing like the base verb. Write it with the when it comes before a noun; after 'be' the is often dropped, and both are accepted.
