A self-seeking person does things only because those things will give them an advantage other people do not have. The word shows disapproval. It is not simply “looking after yourself” — eating, resting, saying no. It is using people, chances, or a group as a ladder. You hear it about politics, office life, and anyone who always asks “What do I get?” Though actually, the same act can look self-seeking to one person and merely careful to another; the word is a judgement, not a photograph. It is usually an adjective (a self-seeking boss), and it can also name the behaviour (his self-seeking).
