In the UK, a solicitor is a kind of lawyer. Solicitors give legal advice and help with things like buying a house, writing a will, or setting up a business contract. They usually don't stand up and argue cases in court themselves - that's more the job of a in England and Wales. There's also an older, more formal use of the word for someone who asks people for something, often money or business - you might see a sign that says "No solicitors," meaning no one may come round selling things or asking for donations.
