組成The pieces are hidden under centuries of change. It came through Old French from an assumed Latin *subdiurnāre: sub- ('under', and here 'a little, a short while') + diurnus ('lasting a day'), from dies, 'day'. So underneath it means something like 'to spend a short spell of days'. Notice that the 'journ' inside it is the same 'day' root you can see in 'journey' and 'journal'.
