A snowmobile is a small motor vehicle made for travelling over snow and ice. Instead of wheels it has a wide rubber belt at the back that turns and pushes it forward, and two ski-like runners at the front for steering. You sit on it like a motorcycle, with , and it usually carries one or two people. In places with long deep winters — Canada, the north of the United States, Finland, Russia, Hokkaido in Japan — snowmobiles are real transport: police, rescue teams, farmers and people living far from cleared roads all use them to get where a car simply cannot go. They are also a popular sport and a tourist activity; on a holiday in a snowy country you can pay to ride one across a frozen lake. They are loud and fast, and in some countries you need a licence. Americans and Canadians often call one a sled or a Ski-Doo (a brand name, used the way people say a common brand instead of the real word). Snowmobile can also be a verb: to snowmobile is to travel around on one.
組成snow + mobile. mobile here means "something that moves / a moving machine", from Latin movere, to move — the same -mobile that gives us automobile. So: a snow-moving machine, built on the pattern of automobile.
