From Middle English schew, schowe, an interjection shouted to drive something off. German scheuchen (to scare away) and Dutch schuwen belong to the same family.

來自中古英文的 schew、schowe,本來就是趕東西時喊的那一聲。德文 scheuchen(驅趕)和荷蘭文 schuwen 是同一家。也就是說,這個字是先有聲音,動詞的用法是後來從那一聲長出來的。
