1. 1

If a place is shipshape, it is neat and clean, and everything is in its right place — ready, not only pretty. The word comes from life on a ship: sailors had to keep their small space tidy and tied down, or rough water would throw things about. People now use it on land for a kitchen, a desk, a bag, or a whole house. It feels friendly and a little old, like something a or a navy person might say, not like a school word. You can also say they left the room shipshape, using it to tell how the leaving was done.
