Shears are a heavy cutting tool that work like a very big, strong pair of scissors. Two blades meet, and you use both hands, or long handles, to cut things thicker or tougher than paper: hedges, branches, cloth in a workshop, or the wool on a sheep. Garden shears, hedge shears, pinking shears (for a zigzag edge on cloth), sheep shears — the word stays the same; the job changes. We almost always treat shears as a pair, like scissors: a pair of shears, the shears are sharp. One half is not really a shear in ordinary talk. They are more serious than kitchen scissors. If it is small and for paper or food, scissors is the usual word; if it is big and for the garden or the flock, shears is the right one.
組成Historically the plural of an old noun shear, a cutting blade. In English the tool is named in the plural, like scissors. Same stem as the verb shear.
