A sharp-witted person thinks fast and answers fast. They catch the joke, see the problem, and find the right words while other people are still catching up. Witted is from wit — the mind's quickness, especially with words and ideas. Sharp-witted is a compliment. It is close to clever, but it stresses speed, not only how much you know. A person can have read many books and still be slow in the moment; a sharp-witted person is awake right now. You hear it in everyday praise, a little warmer and more personal than 'intelligent'.
