    We use dim-witted about a person who is slow to understand things — not clever, not quick. It is an adjective: we say a dim-witted person, not usually “a dim-witted” on its own. The picture behind it is a light that is dim, not bright; here the “light” is someone’s mind. People say it when they are being , or in a story when they want a slightly softer, slightly comic word than stupid. It sounds a little old, and you will hear it more in writing and in films than in careful talk. Do not say it to someone’s face if you want to be kind.
