- 1n/ˈsɛmɪnoʊl/ · /ˈsɛmɪnəʊl/the Seminole people塞米諾族(整個族群)
The Seminole are a Native American people. They came together in Florida in the 1700s, mostly out of groups from the Creek nation. In the middle of the 1800s the US government forced most of them to leave Florida and move to Oklahoma, and Seminole communities live in both places today.
文法複數:這個意思要用複數形式。
「the Seminole」指的是整個族群。不是指某一個人。前面要加 the。後面的動詞用複數,說 the Seminole are。你也會看到 the Seminoles,多一個 s,兩種都有人用。要講其中一個人的時候,英文說 a Seminole。這個族群十八世紀在佛羅里達一帶形成。成員大多來自 Creek 族。十九世紀中,美國政府強迫他們遷往奧克拉荷馬。今天這兩個州都還有他們的社群。這個字也常放在名詞前面,像 Seminole history。那時候意思是「屬於這個族群的」。

The Seminole have lived in Florida for hundreds of years.
中文翻譯塞米諾族已經在佛羅里達居住了好幾百年。
This is the name for the whole people, not for one person. It takes 'the' in front of it, and the verb after it is plural: 'the Seminole are', 'the Seminole have'. You will also see 'the Seminoles' with an -s; both forms are in use. When you mean one person, you say 'a Seminole'. The word also stands in front of another noun — 'Seminole history', 'Seminole language' — where it simply labels something as belonging to this people.

文法可數名詞:前面可以加 a/an,要表示複數時常常加 -s。
這個用法指的是一個人。可數名詞,可以說 a Seminole、two Seminoles。也可以在 be 後面直接說 she is Seminole,不加 a。那種說法比較像在講「她是這個族的人」這個身分。就像我們說 she is Japanese 一樣。開頭的 S 一定要大寫,因為這是族群的名字。這個字本身不表示這個人住在哪裡。今天族人在奧克拉荷馬和佛羅里達都有。
This is the countable use: 'a Seminole', 'two Seminoles', 'the Seminoles in the room'. English also lets you drop the article after 'be' and say 'she is Seminole', the way people say 'she is Japanese'; that sounds like a statement about who someone is rather than about which group they are counted in. The word is always written with a capital S, because it names a people. Nothing in the word itself says anything about where the person lives today — many Seminoles live in Oklahoma, many in Florida.
