- 1n/ˌtʃerəˈkiː/the Cherokee people切羅基族
The Cherokee are a Native American people whose homeland is in the area of the United States that is now North Carolina and Tennessee. They governed themselves through the Cherokee Nation, which was set up in a way similar to the government of the United States. Many Cherokee were later forced to leave their lands and move to a reservation in Indian Territory, in what is now the state of Oklahoma, and many died on that journey, which is known as the Trail of Tears.
文法複數:這個意思要用複數形式。
這個用法前面要加 the。而且當複數看。所以說 the Cherokee were,不說 was。它指的是整個民族。講他們的土地、政府和歷史時,用這個說法。他們自己的政府叫 the Cherokee Nation。制度上和美國的政府很相近。他們的歷史裡有一段叫 the Trail of Tears。那時很多族人被迫離開家鄉,遷到今天的奧克拉荷馬州,路上有許多人死去。要講其中一個人,用 a Cherokee,那是另一個用法。這個名字也用來指他們的語言和文字。所以看到 Cherokee,要看句子才知道指哪一個。開頭的 C 一定大寫。
示範例句 · Example
The Cherokee have their own government, called the Cherokee Nation.
中文翻譯切羅基族有他們自己的政府,叫做切羅基民族政府。
This meaning takes the in front of it and works as a plural, so you say the Cherokee were and the Cherokee have. Use it when you mean the people as a whole: their land, their government, their history. One person is a Cherokee, which is a separate entry. The same name is also used for their language and for the set of signs made for writing it, so the sentence around the word is what tells you which one is meant. Write it with a capital C wherever it appears.

- 2n/ˌtʃerəˈkiː/one Cherokee person切羅基族人
A person who belongs to the Cherokee, a Native American people. It is countable: a Cherokee, two Cherokees.
文法可數名詞:前面可以加 a/an,要表示複數時常常加 -s。
這個意思指的是一個人。所以可以加 a,也可以數。像 a Cherokee、three Cherokees。資料上給的複數是 Cherokees。也常看到 Cherokee 放在另一個名詞前面。像 a Cherokee writer、a Cherokee family。這時候它的位置像形容詞。要講整個民族的時候,英文會換成 the Cherokee,而且當複數看。不管放在哪裡,開頭的 C 都要大寫。
Here the word points at one human being rather than at the whole nation, so it takes a and can be counted: she is a Cherokee, three Cherokees came. The plural given by our source is Cherokees. You will also meet Cherokee standing in front of another noun, as in a Cherokee writer or a Cherokee family, where it does the work of an adjective. When you mean the people as a whole, English switches to the Cherokee, which is treated as a plural. The capital C stays in every one of these.
