Selfbuild (often written self-build) is when you build your own house instead of paying a professional building firm to do the whole job for you. You may still hire electricians or plumbers for parts of the work, but you organise the project, and often you do a lot of the building yourself. The word is especially British: you see it in housing news, planning papers, and adverts for "selfbuild plots" of land. In American English people more often say they are building their own home, without this one-word label. It can name the activity (selfbuild is becoming more popular) or the kind of house. Though actually, a selfbuild house is rarely the work of one person alone — friends, family, and paid tradespeople usually help. It is not the same as buying a finished house from a developer, and it is not DIY in general: it means a house, not a bookshelf.
