    If someone is self-satisfied, they are too pleased with themselves and with what they have done. The word is not a compliment. A self-satisfied person may smile as if they have already won, talk as if no one else could have done it, or stop trying because they think they are finished. Though actually, people sometimes look self-satisfied without meaning to — a quiet proud face can be read as smug. In writing, though, self-satisfied almost always asks you to dislike the pride a little. It is close to smug, and it describes a person, a smile, a tone, or a look.
