Self-sacrifice is when you choose not to take, keep, or do something you want — or even something you need — so that another person can have it, or so that a bigger good can happen. It is heavier than “being nice.” The cost is real: time, money, comfort, a chance, sometimes safety. People say it with respect, often about parents, , or anyone who keeps putting others first on purpose. Though actually, we also stretch it. A friend who always takes the worst seat may be praised for self-sacrifice even when the price is small. What the word still marks is this: you decided, and you paid. It is a noun (her self-sacrifice), not a way to describe a person.

組成self- means “yourself.” Sacrifice comes from Latin sacer, “holy,” and facere, “to make”: long ago, a sacrifice was making something holy by giving it to a god. English kept the idea of giving something up.
