Self-restraint is the ability to stop yourself doing or saying something you want to do, because it would be wiser not to — the last cake, a sharp reply, a foolish spend. It sits very close to self-control, and people often swap the two. Though actually, self-restraint can feel a little cooler and more grown-up: we praise a politician’s self-restraint, or someone’s self-restraint in an argument. It is a noun, and a bit formal for tiny everyday moments; for those, self-control is the more ordinary word. The important picture is you holding you back, not somebody else holding you back.
