A self-indulgent person — or a self-indulgent act — gives in to pleasures that are nice but not needed, especially too often. Extra cake, a third hour of videos, a purchase you cannot really afford: if someone calls that self-indulgent, they disapprove. The word can describe a person, a weekend, a book that goes on too long, or even a film that loves its own pretty shots more than the story. That last use is a stretch, but writers use it: self-indulgent then means “pleasing the maker, not the audience.” In everyday talk it is still mostly about spoiling yourself. Though actually, what counts as “too much” depends on who is speaking — a parent, a doctor, and a tired student will draw the line in different places.
