Self-expression is showing your feelings or thoughts, especially by making or doing something: painting, writing, music, dance, acting. The aim is not only to pass a message, like a weather report. It is to let other people see something of who you are. Art teachers love this word. Though actually, people stretch it a long way now. Clothes, hair, a bedroom wall, even a social-media page get called self-expression, and that is looser than the studio meaning. It is a noun. We say "a form of self-expression" or "self-expression through writing," not "I self-expression." It is also not the same as "expressing yourself" in the thin sense of speaking clearly so people get the facts.
