If you are self-employed, you work for yourself. No company pays you a wage as their staff. You find the work, you send the bill, you keep what is left after costs and tax. Freelancers, people with a small shop, tutors who take their own students, and many drivers or designers may be self-employed. The word is ordinary and slightly official: forms, tax offices, and job ads use it. It does not by itself mean “rich,” “free,” or “always busy.” It only names who your boss is: you. Though actually, the freedom people picture is mixed. You choose the hours, but you also have no paid sick leave unless you arrange it, and a quiet month is your problem, not a company’s. In casual talk people say “I work for myself” or “I’m my own boss.”
「self-employed」就是替自己工作，沒有公司把你當員工領薪水。你自己找工作、自己開帳單，扣掉成本和稅之後，剩下的才是你的。自由工作者、開小店的人、自己收學生的家教，還有很多司機或設計師，都可能是自僱。台灣公文常寫「自營作業」。
這個字很平常，帶一點公文味，表格、稅務機關和徵才廣告都會用。它本身不代表有錢、自由或很忙，只說明老闆是誰：就是你自己。大家想像的自由其實有兩面，你能自己排時間，但沒有有薪病假，生意淡的月份也得自己扛。口語裡常說「I work for myself」或「I'm my own boss」。
