Picture a set of car keys being handed across a desk, and then ask one question of every use of this word: whose self is it? The word is built from self plus drive, so it always says that the driving is done by the thing itself rather than by someone hired for the job. What changes is who counts as the self. Hold the keys and the question together, and the whole entry opens.
