Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do the things you know you ought to do, even when nobody is pushing you, and even when you would rather stop. You get out of bed and study. You put the phone down. You finish the boring part. The work comes from inside you, not from a parent, a teacher, or a fine. Though actually people praise it as if it were a simple muscle, and real life is messier: some days it is easy, some days you only have a little, and being tired or scared can make it much harder. It is not the same as being strict with other people, and it is not the same as punishment. School “discipline” can mean rules and getting in trouble. Self-discipline is you keeping the promise you made to yourself.
