Self-destruction is when someone keeps doing things that are likely to hurt them badly, or even kill them. It can be as hard as that: a person walking toward death on purpose. It can also be a strong way of talking about a life being ruined from the inside — drink, drugs, picking fights, throwing away work and love — even when death is not the next step. The feeling is: the danger is not mainly coming from other people; you are the one lighting the fire. Though actually speakers use it loosely, too, for a team or a company that is tearing itself apart. That is a picture, not a medical fact.
