Self-congratulation is the behaviour of patting yourself on the back — making it clear, in a way that starts to other people, that you think you have done very well. Being glad about your work is fine. This word has a little edge. Writers use it when someone is enjoying their own success a bit too loudly, or when a company or a team is telling itself how great it is. You will meet it in reviews and opinion pieces more than in friendly chat. Though actually, people almost never say “I am doing self-congratulation” about themselves with pride. It is a word you pin on someone else, or on a speech, or on an article. The praise is coming from the same place that wants the praise.
組成self- (yourself) + congratulation (saying “well done”). From self- + congratulation. The self- piece comes down through Old English self.
