A self-congratulatory person, smile, speech, or article is doing that “we were so great” thing — proud in a way that makes other people want to look away. It is the adjective that matches self-congratulation. It names the tone, not a prize. A self-congratulatory press release thanks itself. A self-congratulatory smile says “aren’t I clever?” without needing words. Same little sting as the noun: not simply happy, and not the same as congratulating a friend. You will meet it in newspapers and reviews more than in everyday talk. Though actually, the person being described almost never chooses this word for themselves; it is a label other people put on the noise.
