Your self-concept is the picture you hold of what kind of person you are — 'I'm a hard worker', 'I'm not good at maths', 'I'm the funny one in my family'. It is a term from psychology and education, not an everyday word, so you meet it in textbooks, in teacher training, and in articles about children. It matters because that picture shapes what people try: a student whose self-concept says 'I'm bad at languages' will often stop trying before they have really begun, whether or not the picture is true. Usually countable, with a in front: 'a child's self-concept', 'his self-concept', 'a positive/negative self-concept'. It is close to two other words but not the same. Self-image is more about how you think you appear, often how you look. Self-esteem is how much you like or value yourself — the feeling. Self-concept is the description, the content: not 'I feel good about myself' but 'this is what I am like'. In ordinary English, people say 'how he sees himself'.

組成self- (yourself) + concept (an idea of what something is). So: your idea of yourself. 'Concept' comes from a Latin root meaning to take in or grasp — the same piece that sits inside 'conceive' and 'receive'.
