Self-assurance is the calm feeling that you can handle the thing in front of you — you trust yourself, so you do not need other people to keep telling you that you are doing fine. It is a noun, and it names a quality a person has: 'She spoke with great self-assurance.' Notice that it is about how you feel inside, not about how loud or you are. A very quiet person can have enormous self-assurance, and a very loud person can have none at all. The word feels a little formal — you meet it in books, in news writing, in a report about someone's character, more than in daily chat. With friends, people say 'she's confident' or 'she believes in herself'. Compared with 'confidence', self-assurance is steadier and more settled: confidence can be about one thing on one day ('I have confidence in this plan'), but self-assurance is usually a way a person simply is. It is normally a compliment, though it can turn slightly cool if the speaker thinks the person is too pleased with themselves — a phrase like 'a certain self-assurance' can hint at that. Common patterns: with self-assurance, an air of self-assurance, lack self-assurance, quiet self-assurance.
