    Scotland is the country that sits on the north of the island of Britain, above England. Its capital is Edinburgh, not London — people mix those two up all the time. About five million people live there; a number you will still see in books is 5,295,400, from 2014, and it has moved a little since. Scotland was its own kingdom for a long time. In 1707 the Scottish and English parliaments joined under the Act of Union, and Scotland became part of the United Kingdom. It is still in the UK today, though actually it has kept its own law courts and its own schools, and since 1999 it has had its own parliament in Edinburgh again. English, , and Scottish are all spoken there — and those last two are not the same language.

組成Scot + land, 'land of the Scots.' From Old English Sċotland, Scotlond: the name first meant Ireland as well, and later settled on the country north of England. Dutch Schotland and German Schottland are the same shape.
