A schema is a drawing or a description of the main parts of something — not every tiny detail, just the shape of how it is built. A teacher might draw a schema of a plant: roots, stem, leaves. The point is the map, not a pretty picture. Though actually, English has stretched the word while keeping that core. In psychology, a schema is the mental outline you already carry (what you expect a “restaurant” to be like). In computers, a schema is the plan of how data is organised. Those uses still mean “the main form,” even when nobody has picked up a pencil. Schema and scheme are : they come from the same Greek word. But scheme in everyday talk often means a plan, and sometimes a slightly sneaky plan. A schema is the skeleton; a scheme is what someone means to do.
