Sauciness is the quality of being saucy: that teasing, slightly sexual humour that aims to rather than to shock, or that playful cheek in someone’s talk. It is a noun, and a slightly old-fashioned one. You might say a comedy gets its laughs from a little sauciness, or that a child’s sauciness made the room laugh. The sexual-teasing sense and the ‘answering back’ sense travel together, because both grew from the older idea of sauce as bold, rude talk. It names a light, fizzy kind of boldness, not anything cruel or truly dirty.
