The sandman is an imaginary man in children’s talk who is supposed to make children fall asleep. The old picture is that he a little sand in their eyes, and that is why your eyes feel when you are very tired. Parents say it in a gentle way at bedtime. The English word is sand + man, and this bedtime meaning probably comes from German Sandmann or Sandmännchen, which had the relevant sense by the mid-1700s. It is apparently first attested in English in the context of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story The Sandman (1816). Though actually that story is not sweet: Hoffmann’s sandman is . The kind sandman of bedtime talk and the dark one in that tale share a name, but they are not the same character. There is no real sandman.
組成sand + -man. The mythological sense may be from German Sandmann / Sandmännchen; it is apparently first attested in English in the context of Hoffmann’s The Sandman (1816).
