A saleroom is a room where things are sold by auction: an calls the prices, people bid, and the highest bidder takes the lot. Art, antiques, farm tools, houses of leftover furniture — all of that can go through a saleroom. It is especially British English. American English more often says salesroom, or just auction house / auction room. It is not the ordinary shop floor where you pick something off a shelf and pay at the till. You go there on a sale day, look at the lots, then sit or stand while the bidding runs. The word is plain and a little old-fashioned in a useful way: sale + the room it happens in.
