    Wood or stone that is rough-hewn has been cut into a shape, but nobody has made the surface smooth yet. You can still see the marks of the axe, the chisel, or the saw. The edges are uneven; it looks unfinished. Builders leave beams rough-hewn on purpose sometimes, because that look feels honest and strong. People also stretch the word to people and writing: a rough-hewn character in a story is blunt, simple, not polished by city manners. Though actually, that is a later, looser use. The first picture is always the wood or the stone, still showing how it was cut.
