Rosé is pink wine — not red, not white, but in between. Makers use dark grapes, then take the skins away after a short time, so the juice turns pink instead of deep red. The word is French and means “pinkish.” English kept the French spelling, including the little mark over the e. That mark is a kindness: it tells you not to say the word like the flower rose. You say something closer to “roh-ZAY.” People order it on a warm day, with lunch, or when they want a lighter glass than red wine. A lot still comes from France, though many countries make it now. Though actually, plenty of people think rosé is always sweet and a bit cheap. Some bottles are sweet; a lot of good rosé is dry, which means it does not taste sugary.
