A robocall is a phone call a machine places by itself. You pick up, and a recorded voice starts talking — a sale, a survey, a storm warning, or, too often, a scam. Nobody is sitting there with a handset. Though actually, some recordings now fake a live person and ask you to press 1, so it can feel like a real call even when it is not. You can use it as a verb too: companies robocall thousands of numbers in a minute. The word is informal, American in flavour, and in ordinary talk it is almost always a complaint.
