A rightist is a person — or, as an adjective, an idea, paper, or group — that stands on the political right: often smaller government, stronger tradition, free markets, or a tougher line on crime and borders, though the mix changes by country. The word is sharper and more “label-like” than “right-wing.” Newspapers pin it on people and parties, and it can sound cold, even , like pointing a finger: a rightist politician, a rightist newspaper. Though actually, “the right” is not one neat list of beliefs. A Taiwan rightist and an American rightist do not share the same homework. The usual opposite label is leftist. The “right” here is not “correct”; it comes from the right-hand side of old parliament seating, which later became a political map.
組成right + -ist. Here right is the political side, and -ist names a person (or a stance) who backs that side — the same ending as in artist, but used for politics.
