Leftist means you support left-wing ideas or groups — the same political family as left-wing. It works as an adjective (a leftist newspaper) and as a noun (a leftist). It is built from left + -ist, the ending for a person who follows an idea (think of socialist, artist). The extra flavour is this: leftist often sounds more like a camp, a stamp, or a hard position than left-wing does. People on that side may still use it of themselves; opponents use it to paint someone as extreme. It is not a rude word by itself, but you can hear the temperature of the speaker inside it. In careful school English, left-wing is usually the gentler everyday fit.
