Rhinoplasty is the medical name for an operation that changes the shape of the nose. A surgeon may take down a bump, straighten a nose after a break, open the airway so you can breathe, or build up the bridge. Everyday English often says “a nose job,” which sounds casual and usually means beauty work; rhinoplasty is the word a doctor , and it covers repair as well as looks. Though actually, in Taiwan the talk often jumps straight to 隆鼻, which is mostly “make the bridge higher.” That is only one kind of rhinoplasty, not the whole thing. The word is Greek rhino- “nose” plus -plasty “shaping.” The plastic in plastic surgery is that same “moulding” idea — it is not the material plastic.
