A rhinoceros is a very large, heavy plant-eating animal from Africa or Asia, with thick folded skin and one or two horns sitting on its nose — not on the top of the head like a cow. Five kinds are still alive: two in Africa (the ones people call white and black, though the colours in those names do not help much) and three in Asia. Some have one horn, some two. Their is poor, but they can still run fast if they feel trapped. People hunt them for the horn, so several kinds are in real danger. Though actually, the horn is not bone; it is packed fibre, more like very hard hair, which is why the old claim that horn is medicine was always a cruel mistake. The English name is from Greek “nose-horn,” which is a fair description. We often it to rhino.
組成From Latin rhīnocerōs, from Greek rhīnókerōs “nose-horned”: rhī́s / rhīnós “nose” + kéras “horn.”
