    To rewind is to make a recording go backwards so you can hear or see it again. The word comes from cassette tapes and video tapes: you wound the tape back onto the first reel. People still say rewind for phones and computers, even though there is no tape — you jump back a few seconds, and that is still rewind. As a noun, you can hit rewind. Younger speakers also use it in talk: “Wait, rewind — say that again,” meaning go back in the conversation. Informal to neutral. The past tense is rewound, like wind / wound.
