To revel is to spend time in noisy, happy celebration — dancing, eating, drinking, staying up late, often at a party or festival. You can also call that event a revel, especially in older or literary English, and people still speak of Christmas revels. On its own the verb is a little old-fashioned now (“they revelled until dawn”), though newspapers still like it. What is very much alive is revel in: to take great pleasure in something, even something others might not enjoy. British spelling doubles the l in revelled and revelling; American spelling usually does not. It comes from Old French reveler, “to make merry” or “to be disorderly,” from Latin rebello, “to rebel,” and is a of rebel — same Latin start, two English words. It is not related to reveal, which is about uncovering.
