To retrofit a machine, a building, or a piece of equipment is to go back to something already in use and put newer, better parts into it, instead of throwing the whole thing away. The word lives in workshops, factories, cars, and talk about old buildings — adding seat belts to an old bus, or better windows to an old school. You will also meet the noun: a retrofit is that later upgrade itself. It is a practical, slightly technical word. Though actually, it is not the same as a repair: a repair puts back what was broken; a retrofit adds something the thing did not have when it was first made, or swaps in a better kind of part. The “retro” here means “back to the old thing,” not “old-fashioned style.”
組成retro- (back, backward) + fit (to equip, to supply). The noun came later, either from the verb or from retro- + fit (the act of fitting things together).
