- 1
Retrofitting is the work of a machine, a building, or a piece of equipment by putting new and better parts into it after it has already been in use. It is the -ing form of retrofit, so it can name the job (“retrofitting the old factory will take a year”) or sit with be (“they are retrofitting the buses”). Same world as retrofit: workshops, safety, energy, old buildings. Though actually, it is not a different idea from retrofit — it is the same action, just the form you use while the work is happening, or when you talk about the work as a thing.
