When someone has almost died — they have stopped breathing, or their heart has stopped — doctors or trained people try to resuscitate them. That means they try to make the person breathe again and become conscious again. They may press hard and fast on the chest, blow air into the mouth, or use a machine that gives the heart an electric shock. If it works, we say the person was resuscitated: they came back. This is hospital talk, first-aid-class talk, and news talk. At home people more often say bring them back, save them, or just CPR, which is the name of the chest-pressing method. Though actually, writers also stretch the word: you can resuscitate a plan, a company, or an old fashion that had almost died — you bring it back to life. That use is a bit fancy, more for newspapers than for the kitchen. The picture is always the same: something that had almost gone is made to live again.
