  • The Resurrection does not mean that a dead man came to life again. We are not faced here with a simple problem in resuscitation. Resuscitation is not resurrection, since resuscitation never reaches beyond the natural. The Resurrection means that the Eternal Word who manifested himself in the form of the human—"and was made man"—to acquire all the meaning and all the experience of a human life, and to be means whereby God comes personally within the orbit of humanity as redeeming power, now manifests himself, or is manifested, in still another form. The Resurrection narratives are hopelessly confused on the supposition that they described the activities of a dead man restored to life again. Even on the most literalistic view of the story of Lazarus, it bears a radically different meaning form the accounts of the Risen Christ.
  • Death, like suffering, is an evil, and Jesus the source of life and healing, sees both as enemies. He conquers physical death and restores Lazarus to life. It is resuscitation, not resurrection. Resurrection brings a wonderful, new, and transformed life. Lazarus returned to the same life he had before.
