A resurgence is when something that used to be common, then grew quiet or weak, comes back and starts to grow again. You can have a resurgence of an old fashion, a political idea, or a disease. The word carries a feeling of rising, not just appearing once. Though actually, news writers love it and sometimes use it a little loosely — one good month for a team becomes “a resurgence,” even if nothing lasting has happened yet. It is a fairly formal, written word. Friends might say “it’s coming back” or “people are into it again.” It is stronger than a small return: a resurgence suggests energy and spread, not one quiet comeback.
