Picture an action thrown out like a ball that bounces straight back to the person who threw it. In 'She hurt herself', the hurting leaves her and lands on her — the and the one it happens to are the same person. That bounce-back is what the word labels. It also looks a lot like reflect, which makes a handy hook: the action comes back the way light comes back off a mirror.
