A reciprocal arrangement or relationship is two-way: two people or groups do or give the same kind of thing to each other. I help you, you help me; one school hosts, then the other hosts; two countries drop fees for each other’s goods. It is a tidy, rather formal word — contracts, diplomacy, textbooks — though the idea itself is ordinary fairness. Grammar teachers also call each other and one another reciprocal, because the action goes both ways. In maths, the reciprocal of a number is 1 divided by that number: the reciprocal of 5 is 1/5. That school meaning is very common in Taiwan, and it is the same spelling with a different job. Though actually, life is not always a perfect mirror: people say a relationship is reciprocal when it feels balanced enough, not only when every gift is copied exactly. Do not mix it with respective, which means ‘each to its own.’
